Injury Update

Bruno Guimaraes, who joined Arsenal from Newcastle in a £75 million deal this summer, is not in the squad for the club’s opening Premier League match against Coventry City. The Brazilian forward suffered a groin injury on his debut for the Gunners, when he started the 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City last Sunday. He was replaced by Declan Rice at half-time after a knock, and Arteta said the player had a “slight tension in his groin.” The injury came after only four or five days of pre-season training, and Arteta explained that Guimaraes “hasn’t done a pre-season, he only had four or five days before that game and we had to take him out.”

Squad Implications

Arteta named a 25-man squad for the Premier League opener, leaving Guimaraes, Jurrien Timber and William Saliba out. Timber’s groin injury had already ruled him out of the World Cup, while Saliba sustained a back injury during a France friendly in North America. The bench features Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi, with Ethan Nwaneri on the substitutes’ list. Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus were omitted from the squad, as Arsenal look to offload the Brazilian duo before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

The starting XI for the Emirates Stadium will see Rayan Ait-Nouri in goal, with a back-line of Gabriel, Gabriel, Mosquera, Calafiori. Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ousmane Dembélé will occupy midfield, while Bukayo Saka, Callum Tzolis and Kai Havertz line up in attack.

New Signings and Cover

Arsenal have signed Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million to provide cover for Saliba. The 28-year-old England international signed a four-year contract and could make his debut against his former club. Konsa said, “I’m super excited. It’s a privilege to be here and can’t wait to get started. I want to keep winning, I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for.”

Arteta remains optimistic about Guimaraes’ recovery, stating in a pre-match press conference, “Let’s see how he is. He’s evolving really well, but let’s see for tomorrow.” The Gunners will therefore rely on their depth as they prepare for the first league game of the season.
