Coventry City's search for a first away win of the Premier League season continues after a 3-1 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies secured the points for the hosts, with Jack Rudoni pulling one back for the Sky Blues.
Frank Lampard's side fell behind in the 15th minute when Maddison, making his first start of the campaign, fired a long-range effort past Carl Rushworth. Coventry grew into the contest after the break and were rewarded when Rudoni bundled the ball home from close range to level the score.
The parity was short-lived. Just over ten minutes later, Spurs new signing Marmoush restored the home side's lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the area. Substitute Ben Davies then sealed the win late on, tapping in from a low cross to make it 3-1.
Lampard's tactical switch
Lampard had deployed a back four in the previous week's 4-1 win over Newcastle United but appeared to shift to a three-man defence for this away fixture. The change did not yield the desired defensive solidity, with City conceding more than two goals for the fourth time this season. The team's standings position reflects these struggles, sitting 19th with a goal difference of minus nine.
Key midfielder Viktor Torp was available again after suspension and started the match, while striker Taiwo Awoniyi was also back among the substitutes. The defeat extends a difficult run on the road, with City's next fixture a key home game against Brentford at the Coventry Building Society Arena this Saturday.
Coventry managed 12 shots but only one was on target, Rudoni's goal. They also received three yellow cards to Tottenham's one. The team will look to regroup quickly ahead of a busy period in the fixtures list, where picking up points at home will be vital.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team's response after Coventry's equaliser, stating the players showed good maturity. Coventry's Frank Lampard pointed to a lack of clinical edge in the final third and individual defensive errors as key factors in the loss. The match attendance was announced as 61,254. Coventry captain Liam Kelly missed the match due to a minor hamstring strain, with his absence noted in midfield. Tottenham's victory moves them up to seventh in the table.
