Coventry City eyes Openda as transfer target amid title charge

Coventry City have entered the race for Juventus forward Lois Openda, the club announced on Tuesday, adding another headline to their dominant Championship campaign.

Former Juventus scout Marco Rossi said Coventry’s sporting director, Mark Robins, had sent an inquiry about the 23-year-old. Openda, who arrived on loan from RB Leipzig last summer, is still under a permanent-transfer clause that Juventus must trigger at season’s end. Coventry’s recent form has given them the financial leeway to explore a high-profile signing.

The Sky Blues sit 11 points clear of Ipswich Town. Adding a player of Openda’s calibre could deepen their attacking options beyond striker Viktor Gyökeres and winger Jordan Clarke. Manager Mark Robins believes a player with Serie A experience would help the squad cope with the inevitable pressure of a title race and the prospect of a promotion-playoff battle.

Juventus originally secured Openda on a loan with an obligation to buy for €30 million. If Coventry were to meet that figure, it would represent the club’s biggest outlay since their £20 million purchase of James Maddison in 2022. Financial analysts note that the Sky Blues’ current revenue stream, boosted by record attendance at the Coventry Building Society Arena, could comfortably support a deal of this size, especially with the club already leading the table.

Robins is expected to meet Juventus representatives in Turin next week. If talks progress, Coventry could submit a formal bid before the summer transfer window closes on 31 August. Should the move fall through, the club will likely turn its attention to other targets, but the Openda link alone has already raised the Sky Blues’ profile across Europe.
