Coventry City is closing in on a club-record £17m signing of Switzerland defender Aurele Amenda.

What's the deal?

The Sky Blues have agreed a deal in principle with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign the 22-year-old defender, who has been with the Switzerland team at the World Cup.

Amenda's profile

Aurele Amenda arrives with pedigree, promise, and the profile of a player suited to the demands of top-flight football, having featured 29 times last season, including five Champions League appearances.

Coventry City, currently 1st in the Championship with 95 points, 28 wins, and a recent form of WWWDD, will need height, pace, recovery ability, and composure in possession to survive and build in the Premier League.

Fresh start for Amenda

Amenda's time in Germany has not been without frustration, and a move to Coventry City could offer him responsibility, visibility, and minutes, making it an ideal landing spot for the young defender.

What comes next?

The transfer deal may not remain Coventry's record for long, as the club could break it again with a permanent move for Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, valued at around £20m, which would represent a serious statement from Coventry's recruitment department. With Frank Onyeka already arriving from Brentford and Frank Lampard signing a new contract until 2029, Coventry City is preparing for life back in the Premier League with a strong squad, having scored 97 goals and conceded 45 in their Championship campaign, with a lead of 11 points clear of Ipswich.
