A 14-year-old Coventry City supporter has been arrested following an incident involving a photograph of Bradley Lowery during the club's Premier League win over Sunderland. The last meeting with Sunderland ended Coventry 3-1 Sunderland on Saturday 31 October, with goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni. West Midlands Police confirmed the boy was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and has been released on bail with conditions.

The incident occurred during Saturday's fixture at the Coventry Building Society Arena, where the home team secured a victory. Footage of the fan's actions circulated on social media, prompting a widespread reaction.

Gemma Lowery, Bradley's mother, issued a statement through the Bradley Lowery Foundation expressing her profound distress. "To see such a beautiful memory used in such a cruel way really does make my heart hurt," she said. She urged people not to direct online abuse towards the teenager or his family, asking instead for the club to help him understand the hurt caused.

Coventry City FC stated it is aware of the footage and does not tolerate offensive behaviour. The club said it will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action. Any potential stadium bans or internal disciplinary measures will await the conclusion of the police investigation.

West Midlands Police said they are keeping the victim’s family updated and are working closely with both football clubs. The force added it understands the upset and outrage the video caused in the community.

The incident has cast a shadow over a positive period for the Coventry team, who sit 16th in the Premier League on 9 points after 9 games. Their recent form in the last four matches shows two wins and two losses, following a 3-1 win over Sunderland, a 0-1 loss to Fulham, a 3-1 loss to Tottenham and a 4-1 win over Newcastle. The team has scored 9 goals and conceded 16 this season, leaving them 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. Their next challenge is a trip to face Everton on Friday 6 November, with Everton currently sitting 7th in the table. The squad will travel without several sidelined players, including A. Amenda, H. Wright, J. Eccles, B. Thomas and L. Woolfenden.

Bradley Lowery, who was a mascot for Sunderland, died in 2017 after battling neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. The foundation set up in his name has raised millions for other children fighting cancer.
