Coventry City are preparing for life in the Premier League and have been linked with an interest in the Belgian striker Lois Openda. The Sky Blues are preparing for life back in the Premier League and have been linked with a move for the Belgium international. Openda has spent the season on loan with Juventus from RB Leipzig, the deal included a clause that will make the move permanent this summer for a reported fee of £38m. However, the loan deal has not gone as the club or player would have hoped. The 26-year-old scored just twice in 34 appearances in all competitions and struggled to make too much of an impact. The Italian media outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, despite moving to Juventus permanently this summer, he won’t be staying in Turin for long, with the striker ‘certainly’ leaving. Coventry are said to have made an enquiry over a possible transfer. For Juventus, they will be looking to limit their losses, having paid £38m, suggesting that Openda will be available for a figure lower than that price. It’s also added that the Italian club could instead opt to send him out on loan in the hope of again increasing his value. City are not on their own with their interest, with clubs in Germany keeping an eye on the situation. In the 2024/25 season, Openda scored 13 times and provided 11 assists in 45 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions. Openda would have been hoping to be part of the Belgian squad for this summer’s World Cup. The striker has 33 caps for his nation, and played in both of the nation’s most recent friendlies. But his struggles have seen him left out of the squad by manager Rudi Garcia. While that may not have been the news the player was hoping for, it does make a potential summer transfer slightly less complicated. With Openda not over in North America for the tournament, it frees him up to sort his future sooner rather than later. If they step up their interest, that will be good news for Coventry.
