Coventry City is set to receive the Freedom of the City after winning the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. The club's achievement is to be recognised with an honorary title, with an extraordinary general meeting to consider the motion on 23 June.

What happened?

Coventry City secured promotion to the Premier League in April, almost exactly 25 years after the club was relegated in a 3-2 loss against Aston Villa.

Why it matters for Coventry City

The title saw one of the largest celebrations in Coventry since the team won the FA Cup in 1987, with an estimated 200,000 people following an open-topped bus parade from the Coventry Building Society Arena through the city on the May Day Bank Holiday.

What comes next?

The title can only be awarded if councillors approve the motion, due to be put to them at the meeting on 23 June. If granted, the club would follow in the footsteps of the staff at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

As of 29 Jun 2026, Coventry City sits at the top of the Championship table, with a lead of 11 points clear of Ipswich, and a recent form of WWWDD. The team has scored 97 goals this season, with a goal difference of +52. | Category | Value | | --- | --- | | League standing | 1st in Championship, 95 pts, 28W-11D-7L from 46 games | | Goals this season | 97 scored, 45 conceded | | Lead at the top | 11 points clear of Ipswich | Councillor George Duggins, the authority's leader, nominated the club for the honour, saying 'This is an extraordinary achievement which deserves an extraordinary honour'
