Former Coventry City winger Yang Min-hyeok has apologised after his comments about military service exemption following South Korea's Asian Games victory sparked controversy. The 20-year-old Tottenham prospect, currently on loan at Belgian side KVC Westerlo, issued a 223-word statement on social media expressing regret for his wording.

Yang was part of the South Korea Under-23 team that won gold at the Asian Games, a result that grants athletes exemption from the country's compulsory 18-21 month military service. In an interview after the final, he said the team was "being compensated, and the compensation was military exemption, so it feels like we played with that one thing in mind." He added, "Honestly, whether it was a trophy or a medal wasn’t important."

The apology and clarification

His remarks caused disappointment back home, prompting the detailed apology. "Hello, this is Yang Min-hyeok." he wrote. Yang clarified that representing his country held great significance and that he never intended to belittle those serving in the military. He admitted failing to convey that exemption was just one motivator among many and pledged to make amends through his performances on the pitch.

Yang's Coventry connection

Yang had a brief spell with Coventry City last season, joining on a season-long loan from Tottenham in the January transfer window. He made just four appearances under then-manager Frank Lampard, totalling 101 minutes of action, before the loan was cut short by his parent club. He is now on his third loan spell away from Spurs, at Westerlo, where he is teammates with another Coventry player, striker Norman Bassette, who is also on loan at the Belgian club.

While Yang focuses on his development abroad, Coventry City are handling their own challenges in the Premier League. The Sky Blues sit 18th in the table with three points from their opening five games. Their next match is at home to Newcastle United on 12 October, a key fixture as they look to build on their solitary win this season. The club will be hoping for a positive result to improve their league standings position.
