Coventry City have agreed a £1.6 million deal to purchase council-owned Car Park C, a significant off-field move as the team battles in the Premier League. The land, located opposite the Coventry Building Society Arena on the A444, will be paid for over a decade with all funds directed to the club's official charity, Sky Blues in the Community.

Councillor Lynnette Kelly, the Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council, said the agreement is a positive step. "Control of the car park will enable CCFC to plan for the future and look at wider regeneration of the area, which is exciting," she said. The council's cabinet is scheduled to formally sign off on the deal at a meeting on 13 October.

Deal details and community impact

None of the £1.6m will go directly to the council's coffers. Instead, the club's charity is contractually obliged to use the money to deliver around £160,000 worth of sport and cultural activities across Coventry every year for the next ten years. This structure marks a major shift from the years of conflict that characterised the club's relationship with the council under previous ownership.

Strategic rationale and future potential

Owner Doug King said the purchase will simplify future planning for the stadium area. "This deal will allow us to bring Car Park C alongside all the other areas already in the existing head lease and simplify future regeneration," King explained. The £1.6m price was agreed after the council commissioned an independent valuation from consultants Lambert Smith Hampton. While there are no public redevelopment plans for the car park site currently, the move consolidates control for the club. Several projects for the area, including an indoor ski slope and hotels, have been proposed and abandoned over the years.

The deal arrives as Coventry City, currently 18th in the standings, look to improve on their start to the season. The team has scored 7 goals but conceded 12 in their opening five matches, accumulating three points. The club's recent form shows one win and four defeats from their last five outings. The purchase is set for final approval on 13 October, providing a long-term asset as the squad, focuses on the task on the pitch.
